Friend Makin’ Mondays: Seven

Carlos’ camp was cancelled this morning due to thunder storms which lasted all of 30 minutes. The three hours he is in camp is a huge help to me. I do a combination of  working out, running errands, doing a few things around the house and showering – alone! Well I always shower alone, but the other tasks I am able to accomplish much quicker when I am doing them on my own. I adore him, but even a mom needs a little time to herself. So needless to say the morning didn’t quite go as planned. Instead we baked banana muffins, played Go Fish, and read his new library books all about fire fighters. Actually he read to me, how cool is that! After lunch we began packing for our upcoming weekend away. I am trying to figure out how to pack the two of us in one carry on. I’ll let you know how that goes!

While I’m waiting for my vegetables to finish roasting I have just enough time to participate in this week’s FMM. If you have taken part in FMM then you know the rules. If you’re new, please take a moment to answer this week’s questions on your own blog then add your link in the comments section at: www.alltheweigh.com so others can see your FMM questions and answers. The idea is to connect with other awesome bloggers by posting your own FMM post and commenting on a couple of other posts. Now it’s time for this week’s topic!

FMM: SEVEN

  1. What is your favorite way to spend a Sunday afternoon? I love to be with my family on Sunday afternoons doing something outdoors.
  2. What is your favorite color? according to Carlos it is purple. I would have to say green.
  3. Have you ever been to Europe? do layovers in Amsterdam and Zurich count? I’ve never spent any time in Europe but would love to. We had plans to vacation in Portugal, but things have changed. We still have a fun fall vacation planned, and hope to eventually visit Portugal.
  4. Do you wear glasses or contacts? I wear glasses when driving only.
  5. How often do you brush your teeth? Usually in the morning and before bed, but if I’m working I always brush them at work around 5:30 am.
  6. Share a guilty pleasure. Pedicures
  7. What are you most proud of accomplishing this week? I lost 1.6 pounds for a total of 7.2 pounds since I rejoined Weight Watchers (more on that later I promise)!

Dragons and Color Bombs

This past weekend was fabulous. It started out on Saturday with the live show How to Train Your Dragon in Worcester, MA. If you’ve seen the movie the live show will blow you away with its special effects. Carlos and I both loved it.

On Sunday Carlos, my sister and I made our way to South Shore Plaza in Braintree, MA for Carlos’ first 5K Color Me Rad. My sister served as photographer while we walked and ran along the fun course smiling and laughing the entire way. It was an absolute blast. Here are a few photos from the weekend.

Who knew 5 year olds could make life so busy and fun? Our days are packed with camp (for him), running (for me), swimming, more swimming, spray parks, family days and playing, which doesn’t leave much time for blogging. I’ve got lots to say just not much time to say it. I look forward to having a little more time to write more once Carlos starts school in September but I’m certainly not wishing the time away. Until then I will soak up every moment I can with my little guy. I hope you are having a wonderful summer as well.

Friend Makin’ Mondays: Summertime

This summer seems to be flying by. Carlos starts his first day of Kindergarten on August 29th. At this rate we will be there before we know it. There has been a lot of sun, tons of swimming, play dates, hikes, walks and fireworks. Today Carlos begins camp. I signed him up for a few different morning camps. This one is at a local park. The do arts and crafts, games, play on the playground, etc. It runs from 9am to noon which is just enough time for me to run, shower and do a few errands.

Carlos also takes swimming lessons Monday, Wednesday and Friday in the afternoon. They are learning strokes this summer. One of the best things I think you can do for your child is teach them to swim. We have an incredible program in town taught by my elderly neighbor. He has been teaching these lessons for over 50 years. He doesn’t use any flotation devices. You watch and think there is no way my child will learn to swim like this, but lo and behold they do. The goal of the beginner session is for the kids to swim (doggie paddle) from the deep end of the pool to the shallow end. This is a pool used for swim meets so it’s long. Carlos did it last summer so he is now in the next level of classes. I like how they continue to work with the kids once they know how to swim. Swimming is such a great activity and boy does it tire the kids out! Sleep has been absolutely no trouble this summer. In fact Carlos is usually asking us if he can go to bed by 7 o’clock.

So it’s been busy around here, but a good busy. Carlos and I have an awesome weekend coming up. I will be sure to blog about it. It involves dragons and a lot of color! This week’s Friend Makin’ Mondays topic couldn’t be more appropriate.

If you have taken part in FMM then you know the rules. Summertime

1. What is your favorite thing about Summer? Being outdoors all the time.

2. What is your favorite outdoor activity? Running

3. If you had to choose, would you prefer to be too hot or too cold? I would choose too cold as long as I could bundle up with as much clothing and as many blankets as I like. I would choose too hot if I could live near water.

4. Does your appetite increase or decrease during warmer months? Does it stay the same?  My appetite graciously decreases in summer. I crave fruit and salads. I hate having to cook in the summer, but I do it anyway.

5. What is your favorite seasonal Summer fruit? Berries. We went blueberry picking yesterday and scored about 10 pounds!!

6. Would you prefer to spend a hot summer day at the mall or at a swimming pool? The pool definitely.

7. Are you more likely to tan or sunburn? I burn, but with sunblock I develop a nice glowing tan by the end of the summer.

8. How does your routine change when Summer begins? Carlos doesn’t have school in the summer so life gets even busier. I have had to rely on babysitters, early mornings and evenings for getting my workouts in. As I mentioned above we stay pretty busy during the summer. There is a lot more going on for kids in the summer. We spend a lot of time either at my mom’s pool, spray parks or at our favorite local lake with friends. To me summer is about being outside as much as possible.

9. What is the temperature outside where you are today? 82 degrees and climbing

10.  What is your favorite Summer holiday? My birthday at the end of August?! I guess I would have to say 4th of July though we don’t really do anything all that exciting.

I hope you are enjoying your summer too. Now it’s your turn to answer this week’s questions.  Don’t forget to visit Kenlie’s blog and link up in the comments!

Skin Deep: Mozambique

Thank you so much for the kind comments about my previous Skin Deep posts (Adolescence and the College Years). I feel as though I’m finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel of my weight issues and part of getting to the root of my struggle is identifying how my emotions affect my eating.

I could write volumes on my life in Mozambique. It was one of those life altering experiences that no one else quite understands except maybe my site mate. I beam when I talk about it even today. Sure I had my ups and downs living in a third world country, but overall it was wonderful.

Someday I would love to chronicle my Peace Corps experience here, but for now I’ll just give a brief overview. I joined the Peace Corps when I was 25 years old and received an invitation to serve in the first group of Peace Corps Volunteers ever in Mozambique. Mozambique is located in southern Africa on the Indian Ocean coast.

In October 1998 I left the United States for a 2 year 3 month assignment as an English teacher. The 3 months is pre-service training which includes language, culture and teacher training. From there I was assigned to teach English at the secondary school in a town called Chokwe.

About 6 months before I left for Peace Corps I was at my heaviest weight, 208 pounds. Despite my ups and downs during college and the progress I made with improving my self-esteem I let all that go and of course gained a lot of weight. I joined Weight Watchers at that time and I think I managed to lose about 20 pounds. Before leaving the U.S. my Peace Corps (PC) group met in Denver, Colorado for a 4 day staging event. I remember arriving to the hotel and meeting the group for the first time. I distinctly recall feeling very self-conscious about my appearance. I instantly hated all of my clothing and felt frumpy and fat.

My group was mostly women. Once in Mozambique we found ourselves living in dormitory-like conditions with the women separated from the men. I was angry about my weight, frustrated about my ugly clothing and depressed about my appearance overall. Our shower stalls had no doors on them which only added to the anxiety I felt about my body. I seemed to quickly retreat into myself causing unpredictable mood swings. Needless to say I probably wasn’t very well liked by my colleagues. I did make friends but I don’t think my attitude was often appreciated. I was aware of my negativity, but I couldn’t seem to control it.

By the end of the 3 month training I know I had lost weight. I remember getting weighed at some point during training and I was in the 170s. I certainly felt better and my mood lightened. Upon arriving to my permanent site where I would be teaching I lost more weight. I was walking everywhere. My site mate and I bought bikes and spent hours almost every day riding through the vast agricultural fields that surrounded the town. The heat made me eat less as did the fact that we didn’t have a refrigerator and everything had to be prepared from scratch. I went from being a non-vegetable eater with a diet of mostly white starchy carbs to  a diet full of colorful fruits and vegetables. Mozambique opened up a whole new world of flavor for me.

I gradually lost more weight and had to buy new clothing. I started wearing dresses and skirts. I added cute tank tops to my wardrobe. For the first time in a very very long time I wore a bathing suit at the beach. I actually went into the water sans large T-shirt. I don’t think I weighed any less than 160, but I felt fantastic. I would go out to the disco on the weekends in a cute dress something I don’t think I ever did before living in Mozambique.

About 2 months after arriving to Chokwe I met Orlando. Our friendship developed over the next few months into a more serious relationship. He didn’t seem concerned about my body. He obviously liked what he saw and would compliment me on my appearance. He never made a negative comment about my weight so I didn’t mention my issues with weight.

In June 1999 I went to a PC conference and on my way I caught my pinky finger on something while getting off the bus. It developed quickly into an infection and the medical officer told me to stop smoking. I didn’t bother to heed her warning and by the next morning my finger was extremely swollen and sore. I stopped smoking cold turkey and have never looked back. I had wanted to quit. Orlando didn’t smoke and didn’t seem to love the fact that I did, but I also had misgivings about what it might be doing to my health. I worried that I would gain weight, but miraculously I didn’t.

The Mozambicans had different reactions to my body and they let me know. A comment I heard quite often was how voluptuous I was in reference to my full hips and bottom. The women would outline the shape of my body in the air with their hands and then tell me what a good mother I will be obviously meaning to say that I clearly have the perfect body to deliver a baby.

A perfect example of how Mozambicans viewed weight is exhibited in these typical comments I received often. I might go out in the morning and hear “oh teacher you look so fat today!” I would instantly sulk. My day ruined completely until later in the day wearing a totally different outfit I would be greeted by friends with “are you ok? You look so thin today. Do you feel ok?” Suddenly I would grin from ear to ear, comments from earlier in the day forgotten. To the Mozambicans carrying extra weight was a sign of wealth, health and well-being. Appearing thin signified illness. So in my dysfunctional warped brain I preferred looking sickly. There is something very wrong with that kind of thinking.

It took me a while to wrap my head around the Mozambican mentality towards weight and body image, but in time I grew increasingly less self-conscious about what I looked like. By the time I left Mozambique in 2002 I weighed somewhere in the 160s. I had quit smoking. I overcame my picky eating habits and finally added vegetables to my diet. I discovered that I liked dressing in feminine clothing. I became more active. I was walking and bike riding regularly. Life in Mozambique happens outdoors and I learned to enjoy that aspect of life too. I smiled more and felt a sense of peace inside. Overall I felt better than I ever remembered feeling. I was also a newlywed. My life changed so positively in my almost 4 years overseas. I loved my life in Mozambique and I was very reluctant to leave.

Five Friday Favorites

I absolutely love reading those posts where bloggers mention current favorite things in their lives. The posts are fun and often introduce me to something new. So I thought I would give it a try with just a handful of things I’m enjoying these days.

  1. Victoria Secret’s Love is Heavenly fragrance. I’ve never been complimented on a scent I’ve worn until I started wearing this. My husband and my son were practically taking turns sniffing me the first time I wore it!
  2. The Orchestra App which is essentially a “to do” list. I like the voice activated command feature which allows you to speak your tasks while the app automatically jots them down. You can assign tasks to different people like I do with my husband. Orchestra will email or text the person the information. With a quick touch you check off items once completed. I’m always experimenting with new ways to stay organized and this has proven to be very useful and user friendly.
  3. Vega One Nutritional Shake in Chai Vanilla flavor. I love the flavor of this, warm and spicy. It is not gritty or chalky once blended into a smoothie. The flavor is light yet adds enough sweetness that I do not add any sweetener to it. It is vegan as well as gluten, dairy and soy free. Probably the only downfall is the price. It is about $60 for a 30 oz. container. To offset the price I usually use only half a scoop. I’ve tried other protein powders and shake mixes, but this is by far my favorite.
  4. The extended service plan from Radio Shack.  My son has quite possibly gone through more headphones in his short life than I have owned in my long life. OK maybe not, but close! About 2 months ago I bought him yet a new pair of headphones from Radio Shack because we had a road trip and well, there are only so many times I can listen to the dialogue from Cars 2 shrieking in the backseat. The cashier asked if I would like to purchase the extended service plan for $1. I’m not big on warranties and things like this. They tend to be difficult to use and not worth the money, but I decided to go for it given the sheer number of headphones we’ve replaced this year alone. Lo and behold about 6 weeks after buying the headphones they broke. Now my son assures me it’s not his fault so it probably was his doing, but that doesn’t matter because we have an extended service plan. We popped back into Radio Shack, provided some information and in about a week my son had a brand new pair of headphones at no charge. OK that’s not entirely true. I paid the $1 to get a new extended service plan. Well worth it in my opinion.
  5. If you don’t follow Satu at Bodycapable.com you should head over there. She writes about her journey to live a healthy lifestyle despite the challenge of having a sedentary desk job. Her posts are often based on articles and books she has read and provide thought provoking information. Yesterday she put up a post that, I am honored to say, features my fitness story. Thanks so much Satu!

What’s In Your Bag?

Snap a picture if you can, and tell us about what’s inside your bag today.

This is what’s in my bag.

My everyday bag, a navy blue Longchamp tote, was a gift from my sister. She is the fashionista in the family so I’m sure this name means something to someone and probably cost more than I would spend, but I like it because you can easily wipe it down with a damp cloth. This is a bonus with a sticky fingered five year old. What I don’t like about it is the lack of pockets. Everything just gets dumped in there.

Today this is what I pulled out of the bag clockwise from the lower left corner:

  • My coupon organizer which I carry around faithfully but never seem to open when I’m at the store because I’m usually in too much of a rush
  • Costco coupons that are usually expired by the time I get there to use them
  • Two pens that made there way home from work with me. No wonder why we never have black pens at work! I eventually return them.
  • Blood donor information sheet because I gave blood earlier today. Carlos and I walked down to the library for books only to find a blood mobile going on. We got there just as it began so I signed up immediately. I was due to donate a few weeks ago so this was perfect timing. I also got that snazzy T-shirt in the middle for donating.
  • Two different lotions, one with a pretty scent and the other without.
  • A love note from my son. It just says Love, Love, Love with a strange picture I fear is supposed to be me. He has taken to leaving me notes either in this bag or my work bag.
  • Ibuprofen
  • A ring with all sorts of hair paraphernalia. I keep another one in my work bag and another in my gym bag. I try to keep elastics in my car as well because I cannot run with my mop flying free. It is the worst! Once I tried to fashion a pipe cleaner Carlos had in the back seat from some school project into a hair tie. Hair disaster!
  • Small wallet/phone holder. I keep my license and a credit card in here for quick trips out.
  • Large wallet with other cards, change and lip gloss.

The best part about this post was cleaning out my bag. Now it’s your turn to answer this week’s questions.  Don’t forget to visit Kenlie’s blog and link up in the comments!

Skin Deep: College Years

College was a bit of a bumpy ride in the beginning. I went away to college, then transferred to another out of state college before finally settling back into my childhood home just before the beginning of second semester my freshmen year. I attended community college for the rest of freshman and sophomore years before transferring to the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. I commuted throughout my junior year and then finally moved to Amherst the summer before my senior year.

Needless to say my first 3 years of college did not at all mirror the mental image I created before leaving high school. I struggled both physically and emotionally. My weight crept up higher than ever. By the time I moved to UMass I was not only obese, but I was indulging in some terrible habits. I was, at that time, a pack per day cigarette smoker. I drank coffee first thing in the morning and other times throughout the day which would be ok if it hadn’t been loaded with milk and sugar. I turned 21 the summer I moved to Amherst and subsequently enjoyed my share of Zima (anyone remember those!), wine coolers and Kamikaze shots that summer and well into the fall semester. It took me all of a few months to realize that drinking was not my thing. Instead I began drinking Diet Coke like it was going out of style.

My eating habits went from bad to worse. Once I moved from my Mom’s house to an off campus apartment in Amherst my diet consisted of things like bagels, calzones, pizza and burritos. I didn’t eat vegetables then and I was most definitely a meat eater. I also didn’t cook, so much of what I ate was from restaurants or a box, as in Kraft Macaroni and Cheese.

During my winter break junior year I did a 3 week intensive Spanish class in Cuernavaca, Mexico. I quickly became friends with the two other women from UMass. Within days of knowing each other they both encouraged me to stop wearing my big baggie T-shirts. They told me that I didn’t have to hide my body. One night before going out my new friend suggested I tuck in my shirt (gasp!). Not very fashion forward but in many ways better than the shirt dress I had been wearing. It took some getting used to but it was the impetus for thinking about what I was wearing rather than simply covering myself.

The second semester of my senior year I lived in Mexico again for a study abroad experience. I had the time of my life. This time I lived in Taxco, a beautiful silver mining town located south of Mexico City in the state of Guerrero. The town was carved into the mountainside which made for lots of hills. I walked everywhere and naturally slimmed down enough to feel somewhat comfortable with my body. I was still pleasantly plump and curvaceous, but it turns out the Mexican men find that attractive. For the first time in my life I was asked to dance at the discotecas. I received harmless cat calls and one funny marriage proposal on the way to school in the morning. It didn’t go to my head if that’s what you’re thinking. I found the attention a bit comical, but it was never crude or degrading. Honestly it made me smile. I met a lovely man towards the end of my semester abroad. We dated briefly. He was kind, thoughtful and made me feel beautiful. Our time together was short but it left a lasting impression on my self-confidence.

There was one other factor in Mexico that significantly improved how I felt about myself. I became friends and later roommates with two young women from England. They were the two most confident, brazen, hilarious women I had ever met. As if that wasn’t enough they also had those great British accents! Only a Brit can tell you to F off and make it sound like they are paying you a compliment. They put up with my self-loathing for all of a minute before one of them was fashioning together an outfit to wear dancing and the other was giving me a makeover. They simply wouldn’t stand for my negativity and therefore in order to hang out with them I had to start liking myself…at least a little.

At the end of the semester I spent an extra few weeks traveling all around southern Mexico by myself. This was a very empowering journey. It was a tremendous experience. I learned a great deal, met interesting people along the way and saw some amazing places like the pyramids of Chichen Itza, the quaint colonial town of San Cristobal in Chiapas, the ancient Mayan ruins of Palenque, and the pristine beaches on the Oaxacan coast. I discovered that I was resourceful, capable and much more confident when exploring life on my own.

Family and friends couldn’t help but notice how much better I looked upon my return home. It wasn’t just that I had lost a little weight, it was that I had gained some self-confidence. I was refreshed and so enamored with my entire experience in Mexico.

I still fell prey to the vicious cycle of dieting throughout college. The negative self talk seemed to be most rampant when my friends were dating. I felt left out and lonely. These feelings were  inevitably linked to how I felt about my appearance. I set unrealistic goals on the weekend, vowing to make drastic changes just about every Monday and by Tuesday I would be back uptown chowing on a huge slice of pizza. I joined the gym, I quit the gym. I began vigorous walking and roller blading routines only to find other more important things to do with my time like hanging out at a pub with friends.

My college years were fun. I finally had friends and a social life. College life didn’t quite end upon graduation for me because I took a job on campus. My bad habits continued as did the yo-yo dieting. The little bit of self-confidence I developed remained, but I wasn’t truly happy. At a time when I should have been meeting the world head on with enthusiasm and ambition I shrunk back. I had dreams and plans, but they were buried under doubts and skepticism.

Friend Makin’ Mondays: Bedroom Habits

If you have taken part in FMM then you know the rules. If you’re new, please take a moment to answer this week’s questions on your own blog then add your link in the comments section at: www.alltheweigh.com so others can see your FMM questions and answers. The idea is to connect with other awesome bloggers by posting your own FMM post and commenting on a couple of other posts. Now it’s time for this week’s topic!

FMM: Bedroom Habits

1. Do you set an alarm clock? If so, for what time? Yes. On nights I work the alarm is set for 9:50 p.m. and on my nights off it is set for 6:20 a.m. However, the mornings I am home I usually don’t need my alarm because Carlos is up around 5:45 every day and he makes sure I am too!

2. How many hours of sleep do you get on an average night?  This is a tough question. I have to preface my answer by saying that my sleep habits are affected by the fact that I work the night shift 4 nights a week. My doctor is aware and is not at all concerned. I have been doing this for 7 years and it just works for me and my family.

So to answer the question I sleep about 4-5 hours on average on the nights that I work. I sleep 8-9 hours on my nights off.

3. Do you bring your laptop to bed? I only bring my laptop on my nights off and that’s only if I go to bed early while my husband is downstairs watching TV. We do not have a TV in the bedroom.

4. How many pillows do you require to sleep? Two

5. Do you sleep with socks on? In the winter I tend to be cold all the time so I often wear socks to bed.

6. How often do you change the sheets?  Once a week I wash all the bed linens.

7. Do you remember your dreams? No.

8. Which side of the bed do you sleep on?  The left side if you are standing at the bottom facing the bed.

9. How often do you take naps? No, but I always did when Carlos took naps. I napped when he napped. My family actually refers to my sleep on work nights as a nap.

10. Do you sleep soundly?  Yes I do! I have absolutely no problem falling asleep and staying asleep. I wear ear plugs on the nights I work. On my off nights I go to bed anywhere from 7:30 to 10:30 and I sleep until morning.

Skin Deep: Adolescence

I’ve always been awkward inside my own skin. I marvel at people who convey confidence through their appearance and the way they speak. I want to know what that feels like. I’ve never been very confident. Even on my wedding days (there have been 2) I didn’t feel like the prettiest girl in the room. I was happy, but not confident. With age I’ve gotten much better at masking how I feel on the outside. For so long my face showed exactly what my mind was thinking and my body feeling.

Much of how I feel about myself has been directly linked to my weight. I’ve been overweight for as long as I can remember. Or have I? I look back at myself in photos and I don’t really look that heavy, but I sure did feel heavy. I wonder where those feelings came from. I always considered myself bigger than my friends. It made me self-conscious and because of it I developed a defensive outer edge with a sharp sarcastic wit. This not only rendered me ugly on the inside it made me very difficult to deal with and be around.

By the time I was in high school I was miserable. I watched from the sidelines as classmates began dating and socializing at sporting events, parties, dates, etc. Sure I had a few friends and talked to people at school, but I never seemed to fit in to any particular group. I spent a lot of time wallowing in my bedroom.

It’s no surprise that I was on a different diet weekly or pledging to starve myself until I was a beautiful, skinny popular girl. The starvation idea usually got thrown out the window by lunchtime. I hid under baggy clothing which did little to boost my self-esteem.

I wasted a great deal of time obsessed with my mediocre appearance. I sang the it’s not fair song far too much yet truthfully did nothing to change things. I was full of envy for anything I wasn’t. I envied the beautiful girls, the intelligent girls, the witty girls, the cute as a button girls, the thin girls, the girls with gorgeous flowing hair, the artistically talented girls. Envy is an extremely powerful and negative emotion…it destroys the soul. When I looked at myself I saw ugly both inside and out. I felt inadequate in every way. If you asked me what I was great at I would tell you that I couldn’t think of one thing. As I neared high school graduation I was certain that I would at last morph into the beautiful swan I was meant to be.

Friend Makin’ Mondays: One or the Other

Seriously it’s Monday again?! Last week flew by and so did the weekend. Three nights more to go on my long stretch at work. So far so good. Hopefully there will be no admissions tonight and everyone will sleep like babies…ahhhh wishful thinking on my part. A girl can dream though.

So the plan today was for Carlos and me to meet my sister in Central Massachusetts for a hike. After work I went to the gym for a really quick strength training session then home for breakfast. Carlos and I were going to do a quick grocery shopping before hitting the road. That’s when I realized that the garbage disposal was broken. I quickly figured out that somehow a piece of my red measuring spoon was jammed under the blade against the wall of the disposal.

I have now watched just about every You Tube video on fixing garbage disposals. I have played with the special garbage disposal wrench, an Allen wrench and a broom stick. I have done it all to no avail so sadly Carlos and I had to change our plans and run to Home Depot instead. My husband is out doing a side job so he knows nothing yet. He will undoubtedly blame me even though I didn’t see the measuring spoon go in there. It is likely that it fell out of the dish drainer yesterday possibly while I was sleeping before work (my point – I had absolutely nothing to do with it). The problem is I have a bad track record with garbage disposals. Anyway the new one is here waiting for him. I’m sure with a lot of time and patience I could install it myself. I have neither of those things today and it’s really hot outside.

Carlos and I declared it a “whatever” day and we are having a dance party in the kitchen as we speak.
