Friend Makin’ Mondays: Bookworms

The topic of Friend Makin’ Mondays this week is one of my favorites – Books. I have always been an avid reader from the time I was young. Then I went to nursing school and I was consumed into the world of text books. Shortly after I graduated and started working as a nurse I had my son. Reading anything other than a short article was impossible until the last couple of years. I am so happy to be enjoying one of my favorite pastimes again.

If you’ve taken part in FMM then you know the rules. If you’re new, please take a moment to answer this week’s question on your own blog then add your link in the comments section at: www.alltheweigh.com so everyone can see your FMM questions and answers.  The idea is to connect with other awesome bloggers so take a moment to post your own FMM post and comment on a couple of other posts. Now it’s time for this week’s topic!

FMM: Bookworms

  1. How often do you read for pleasure?  I always have a book in progress. I try to read a little of my book each day, but that doesn’t always happen. However, if you count blogs and magazines then I read daily for pleasure.
  2. Are you currently reading a book?  If so, which one?  I am in the midst of The China Study and I just started re-reading The Hunger Games because I am going to see the movie next week on opening night.
  3. Do you subscribe to any magazines and/or newspapers?  If so, which ones?  Apparently I subscribe to Better Homes and Gardens. I don’t remember subscribing, but I receive the magazine regularly.
  4. Do you prefer reading traditional books or using an e-reader?  I am a bit old fashioned when it comes to books. I love the feel of a book, the cover art, turning the pages. I’ve always been enamored with libraries and book stores. However, I do have the Kindle App and iBooks on my iPhone. I am currently reading The China Study on my Kindle App. I love the convenience of the e-reader especially when I am in a long line, traveling or have to wait a while for something. Eventually I would love an iPad.
  5. How often do you go to the bookstore?  Sadly, almost never. We do go to the library about once a week though. My son just got his own library card which was a very proud day for both of us.
  6. Do you read at the gym? No not really. Occasionally I will read while on the Arc Trainer but that seems to be the only machine I can have an effective workout while reading.
  7. Have you ever been a member of a book club?  No I have never been in a book club. I would love to be in one, but I don’t know of any.
  8. Do you wear glasses when you read? No only for driving.
  9. Has anyone read the Hunger Games?  If so, would you recommend it?  Yes I have read it and as I mentioned I am re-reading it. My co-worker introduced me to the Hunger Games series. We both read the books very quickly. The Hunger Games itself is by far the best of the series. I would recommend it, though by now I think it has become one of those books that people love to criticize because it has gained so much notoriety. I am aware that it is considered Young Adult literature. I am open to reading all kinds of books. I love a good history book. I soak up a good romance. I can get caught up in a murder mystery.  The Hunger Games is a quick read and doesn’t strain the brain by any stretch of the imagination, but it is fast paced and the characters have a way of grabbing hold of you. I love to escape in a book and this was that kind of book.
  10. What is your favorite thing about reading?  Reading takes me all over the world without leaving home, it takes me into the past, present and future and gives me the power to learn about anything I wish. I feel very fortunate to have the ability to read.

With that said I’m off to read a few pages before falling asleep. Happy reading and hope you are having a wonderful Monday! It’s like early summer here in Western Massachusetts.

Rock ‘n’ Roll

Life totally took over the past two weeks. I actually took a week off from my training schedule last week. I did no formal exercise whatsoever for one week. It was a very difficult decision but something had to give. I worked extra, Carlos was on school vacation last week, we had play dates, I had a hair appointment (holy grey!) and I had a couple of pre-planned commitments to speak to two Girl Scout troops about the Peace Corps and my experience in Mozambique for their World Thinking Day. Oh and somewhere in there I had to sleep, cook, clean and do laundry. So needless to say exercise took a back seat for the first time in a very long time.

It was a conscious decision to take the week off. I wish I could say that I was vigilant about eating light and healthy all week, but it seems as though hormones and stress took over. I overdid it here and there and felt just horrible. But it’s over. The week is done.

The old me would have probably just ditched exercise all together and continued allowing more and more “treats” as snacks until clothing didn’t fit and I was right back to where I started. I’m happy to report that my clothing still fits, the scale didn’t beat me up and I started the week off with a 10 mile run on Sunday. Yesterday morning while Carlos was at school I ran 9 miles just because I felt like it. The morning was gorgeous and I had the time so I went with how my legs felt. They felt like running!

I’ve been trying to get my race schedule set for the year, but some of the race registrations haven’t opened up yet. Last night I was finally able to register for my first international race.

I will be running the Lisbon, Portugal Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon on September 30, 2012!! Oddly enough my husband and I had decided on a vacation in Portugal in September. I love incorporating races into vacations. It’s a fun way to see a new place and usually the race environment is very family friendly.

Now I just have to plan our trip! We are hoping to see as much of the small country as we can. My husband, of course, wants to see a soccer game. I don’t mind I actually like going to games. There will be some beach action and maybe a visit to a winery or two. Yes we are taking Carlos, but neither Orlando nor I are big drinkers. I just love visiting vineyards and trying a sip or two. They are usually beautiful places and often have good restaurants on site or nearby. If anyone reading this has ever been to Portugal please let me know what you enjoyed about your travels there. We would love recommendations on places to go, things to do and of course places to eat.

Friend Makin’ Monday: Travel

I missed last week’s FMM. This week is one of my favorite topics.

If you’ve taken part in FMM then you know the rules. If you’re new, please take a moment to answer this week’s question on your own blog then add your link in the comments section here at: www.alltheweigh.com so others can see your FMM questions and answers. The idea is to connect with other awesome bloggers so take a moment to post your own FMM post and comment on a couple of other posts. Now it’s time for this week’s topic!

FMM: Travel

Where did your most recent trip take you? First stop was to the Plattsburgh, NY area to visit a very dear friend and from there we spent a night in Montreal.

Is there a place that you’d like to visit that you haven’t yet?  If so, where?  Honestly I would go anywhere. I love to travel. A few of the places I have always dreamed of visiting are Machu Pichu, Tibet, Australia, Italy and the Great Wall of China. I would also really like to start seeing more of the United States.

Do you travel lightly, or do you cram as much into your luggage as possible? It depends on where I am going. I like to travel as light as possible but with a small child that can be challenging. When my husband and I went to Bermuda for our anniversary we each took a carry on only. That made for easy traveling.

Do your eating and exercise habits change when you travel? If so, how? I try to continue making healthy choices. I research restaurants and travel with plenty of healthy snacks.

I no longer use travel as an excuse not to exercise. In fact it has actually become a reason to stay fit since we have been traveling to more race locations. If I am not running a race then I use the hotel gym or go out for a run. Travel usually involves lots of walking.

Tell us about a place you’ve been that you’d like to go back to. I would love to explore more of South Africa. I’ve been to Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Kruger National Park on safari but there is more I would like to see. I would also love to go back to Bermuda since we were only there for 2 nights.

Do you prefer to travel at a certain time of year? I don’t have a preference, but we do most of our traveling in the winter because it is easier for both my husband and I to take time off. As a mason he often gets laid off in winter and I’m usually not competing with the other 2 nurses at night for time off since most people vacation in the summer.

If you had to choose, would you go to the beach or the mountains? The mountains!

Have you ever needed a passport to travel? I got a passport when I was 20 for a month long study abroad program in Mexico. I have since used it many times for travel back to Mexico, Mozambique, South Africa, Canada, the Dominican Republic and Bermuda. The photo in my current passport is horrendous. I cannot wait to renew it.

My son got his passport just before his first birthday and we have to renew it this year already. He is so tiny in the photo. I remember taking him to the post office for the photos and we had to prop him up on a chair. Here I go getting all nostalgic again!

Do you collect anything in your travels? No. I try to take lots of photos to have lasting memories but that’s it. My husband has decided to start bringing home at least one piece of foreign currency from our travels to other countries.

Where do you plan to go next? We have tentative plans to travel to Vermont for a half marathon in May. I am hoping to do a couple of weekend getaways this summer and I am working on plans for a trip abroad in the fall.

Now it’s your turn! Have a wonderful Monday!!

Fairies and Falls

I am running my next race in a month. I will be running in the Holyoke St. Patrick’s Day 10K Road Race on 3/17/12. I’ve run parts of the route during marathon training, but I’ve never run the route all at once. Yesterday I decided to run the route right from work. The hospital I work at is located on the course. It was a spectacular morning for a run. The air was crisp and the sun was shining.

This course is quite hilly. I started out on what will actually be closer to the end of the race. The hospital is about half way down the only downhill portion of the race. Although I am trying to increase my speed and shooting for a sub-1 hour 10K by summer I decided to simply run the route without looking at my Garmin until the end. This way I could determine my baseline and where I need to improve.

This run was challenging. I promised myself I would run up each and every hill without walking no matter how slowly I ran. I tackled the hills one by one and stayed true to my promise. My legs were feeling it by the last hill, but I knew the rest was downhill from there.

I had a huge smile on my face as I sped down the last bit of my run. I turned the corner onto the sidewalk of a very busy main road in Holyoke. My car was across the street in the hospital parking lot so I only had about 2/10 of a mile to go. Suddenly I was airborne. I came crashing down on both palms. My knees hit the ground next. My eyes stung as I blinked away the tears. I couldn’t bring myself to look towards the street because I was sure people were watching me and what a sight I must have been.

It seemed like a lot of time went by but it was only seconds that passed before I picked myself up and walked across the street to where my car was parked. My palms were bleeding and I could feel my elbow and knees burning.

Mileage and some bleeding! Makes me feel a little hard core!!

That is the good hand in the picture. The other one had much more blood. The run ended up being a little longer than 6.2 miles as you can see in the picture. I ran 6.71 miles in 1:07:39. Though the time was probably a little less because I obviously didn’t stop the clock midair! I am pretty happy with that time considering the hills. I will continue with speed work over the next few weeks, but I will add in more hill training. I may not make my goal on this next race, but I can feel myself getting close.

Normally I run with my iPhone in my hand when I am using it to listen to music. However, yesterday my saving grace was that I had put it in my SpiBelt otherwise my screen would have been cracked for sure.

In other news we will be having a special fairy visitor tonight. My baby lost his first tooth this morning. I have been preparing myself for this all week since I discovered the loose tooth last Sunday. We were upstairs brushing our teeth and the tooth was just hanging on by a thread which for some reason kind of grossed me out.  I said oh it looks like it’s about to come out. Carlos started swishing that tooth around with his tongue and then out it popped.

It was so exciting that it happened on a day when we were all home as a family. My husband sometimes misses things because he works during the day. I have the tooth safe and sound in a little pouch. The tooth fairy has been notified via email because that’s how she rolls these days. I asked Carlos what he thought she might leave him and he said, “a dollar or two pennies.” Two pennies I can do! Who am I kidding I’ll leave the dollar!!

When I was pregnant everyone with kids told me how quickly time goes when you have children. They were right. When I noticed that Carlos’ tooth was loose last week I got quite emotional about it inside. His baby teeth are pretty much all that is left of “my baby.” He will obviously always be my baby boy, but he is growing so quickly. I should have also taken a photo of him in his high water size 5 jeans. He just turned 5 in December and already I have to shop for size 6s! If only we could make time stand still once in a while.

I’m off for a run on another gorgeous sunny winter day. Enjoy your Sunday!

Wordless Wednesday: Runners High

I'm working on getting my 10K time under 1 hour. On Sunday I ran a solo 10K in 1 hour 2 seconds. Getting close!

On Monday I made 3 runs in a row at an under 10 minute mile pace. Another 5K in under 30 minutes. Feels great to be getting a little faster.

My aunt lives in Agawam, the town I grew up in. While she watched Carlos for an hour on Tuesday I took the opportunity to run in a different area. Part of my run was on the bike trail along the Connecticut River. The weather was so gorgeous. It felt like a spring day.

I may or may not have planned my running route in Agawam to include running past the house I grew up in and lived in until I was 23 years old. This is it!

Food Journal 2/10/12

After writing my angry letter to myself I got busy with my food journal. If you haven’t visited my food journaling partner in crime’s blog please head on over to Marion’s site to see what she’s been eating. If you don’t regularly read Marion’s blog Affection for Fitness please take a few moments to read through some of her recent posts. They are so well written and thought provoking as always.

This is my food journal entry from Friday, February 10, 2012.

Breakfast: Smoothie with spinach, 1/2 c frozen pineapple, 1c almond milk and 1 scoop protein powder
About 1 hour after breakfast on my way to pick up Carlos from school: an apple
Snack before lunch: I’m snacky and I just packed up a bag of Cheerios in Carlos’ snack bag for school on Monday. I left a  1/2 c. dry Cheerios out on the counter. I’m going to leave them out and eat them one by one as a way to give myself something to snack on while keeping it healthy and low calorie.
*This is hard. I want to eat the whole measuring cup in one bite. How terrible is that?
Note: I managed to take at least 15 minutes to eat the Cheerios
Lunch: kale, broccoli and 1/2c. chick peas sautéed with 1T coconut oil, 4T lemon juice, 3T water and 3T nutritional yeast (this is ridiculously addicting)
This afternoon we went ice skating for about an hour and 15 minutes.
Snack: 2 apple cinnamon rice cakes, 1 cheese stick
Dinner isn’t for another hour. I’m making pasta fagioli soup. I’m in the kitchen and naturally want to eat. Instead I’m sipping on a 25 cal packet of diet hot cocoa.
Dinner: bowl of Pasta fagioli with about 2T grated Pecorino Romano cheese
Snack later while watching Dateline with Orlando: kiwi and banana with cinnamon, another packet of diet hot cocoa because the fruit didn’t really kill my sweet tooth

Reflections/Readings/Thoughts
Clearly snacking is an issue. It’s as though I think about food all day long or I just need to be munching on something at all times. I really envy people like my husband who eat because they have to, not because they really care about food. I care…a little too much.
In researching ways to stop snacking so much I came across a segment from the Dr. Oz show on food addiction. In a companion article Dr. Oz outlines the 5 warning signs of a food addict. These are namely:
  1. Hiding food
  2. Thinking about food more than 1 hour a day
  3. Emotional eating
  4. Experiencing withdrawal symptoms when not eating (shaking, dizziness)
  5. Unable to stop eating even when not hungry
Dr. Oz points to three strategies in order to regain control of your eating habits:
  1. First think about why you are eating. If it is out of frustration, loneliness, anxiety or boredom put down the food.
  2. Journal your emotions about food
  3. Keep a food log
So am I a food addict? Well Dr. Oz notes that in order to be considered addicted to food you would experience 3 out of 5 of the warning signs. I would say that numbers 2 and 3 are definitely applicable to me though there are times when emotions are running high and I actually don’t eat. I don’t hide food. I have never experienced withdrawal symptoms from not eating. I can stop eating most of the time, but sometimes it feels like I have a black hole inside my stomach that just won’t get full. I don’t usually give in to that feeling yet it bothers me.

While I may not have a true food addiction I definitely struggle with my relationship with food. I’m glad to see that a significant part of battling my often out of control eating habits is writing about it. It has helped me a lot over the weekend and definitely staved off some of the eating I would have normally done.

Attack before it Attacks You
I have been trying to get out of the kitchen as much as possible particularly in the afternoon. Twice last week we went ice skating. I also moved myself into the dining room for laundry folding, bill paying, etc. Being out of the kitchen removes the immediate temptation of food all around me.
Failing to Plan is Planning to Fail
I love kale. I buy big bundles of kale almost every week. I find that if I clean it, tear it off the stems and store it in a container I am much more inclined to make myself a healthy lunch. Half the battle is preparing it but once it’s all prepped I make massaged kale salads, the sautéed kale I mentioned above, kale egg white omelets or kale smoothies. Lunch is not my favorite meal. I don’t like sandwiches so having the kale on hand and ready to go really helps me to make a better choice.
Girls Just Want to Have Fun!
I have mentioned my latest fun activity ice skating. Well I actually bought my own ice skates last week. They aren’t figure skates. They were recommended by my cousin who is a hockey player. His wife owns the same kind and loves them. They are SofTec Recreational skates and look a little like these only mine are black and red.
Jackson SofTec 1500 Recreational Figure Skate Ladies
On Friday when I took Carlos to skate during the public skate hours at the rink nearby I met a hockey coach/ice skating instructor. He was there with his youngest son who was only 3 years old. We got to talking and I told him that while I really enjoyed being on ice skates I really have no idea how to skate. He mentioned that he teaches an adult Learn to Skate program. It starts in March and runs for one hour every Sunday afternoon for 6 weeks. It’s more hockey skating rather than figure skating in the sense that we will be learning the basics of skating like stopping, going backwards, turning, etc.

Guess who is going to be taking ice skating lessons?! I’m so excited about this. I’ve gotten a few funny comments and looks from the few family members and friends that I’ve told about it, but I don’t care. It is a nice break from the running. It’s great exercise. Plus it just sounds like fun.

You know for years I avoided doing things like this because I was so uncomfortable in my skin. Now I might not be where I want to be with my weight but I’ll be damned if I am going to let that stop me from trying new things. So Olympics Learn to Skate here I come!

Healthy Heart Challenge

Lori from Finding Radiance is hosting a Healthy Heart Weekend. The idea is to challenge yourself to do some sort of activity this weekend to promote heart health. I had heard about the Healthy Heart Challenge from a few blogs that I read. I am so glad to have discovered Lori’s site as a result and I signed up to take place in the challenge. If you haven’t read Lori’s story please do as it is very inspiring.

My goal was to run a solo 5K in under 30 minutes. I jumped out of bed this morning and got ready to run. There was a light snow falling outside. I love running in the snow! Off I went. I kept my pace under 6mph and finished strong.

Healthy Heart Challenge Results

I rocked my challenge. I felt great. I’ve been working on improving my speed for my upcoming 10K and I’ve been seeing some progress. The snow didn’t amount to much but you can almost catch a glimpse of the light dusting on the ground behind my arm.

Did anyone else take part in the challenge? If not what kind of activity did you do today? The day isn’t over yet so get out there and give your heart a little love.

Angry Letter to Myself

I believe that the only way to make permanent changes in your life is to be brutally honest with yourself. We often look at others who complain about something they want to change in their life and we can instantly identify what they are doing to prevent themselves from making that change. However, it’s almost impossible to tell people the truth even though we all need to hear it once in a while. Since I’m unlikely to hear this from someone else I’m going to tell myself exactly what I need to hear right now.

Dear Aimee,

For years you have struggled with your weight. From your highest weight of 208 pounds (not pregnant)/223 (pregnant) to your lowest weight of 160 you have struggled. Weight loss has never come easy to you, nor will it. If it was easy to lose weight everyone would be thin. It’s hard work to lose weight. The funny thing is you’re no stranger to hard work. You’ve done lots of hard jobs and busted your ass to do a stellar job at whatever you do. You have worked as a waitress, a nurse’s aide, lifting boxes off of trucks as a receiver for Barnes & Noble and as a nurse on the medical floors. Those jobs were physically demanding yet you did them day in and day out without complaint.

Weight loss is challenging. You never back down from a challenge. You joined the Peace Corps and spent almost 4 years living in Mozambique. You decided to become a nurse in your early 30s and studied full time while working full time. You trained for and ran a freaking marathon. If that’s not challenging then I don’t know what is.

Weight loss requires sacrifice. Now you’re no stranger to sacrifice. Aren’t you the one who works nights so you can stay home with your son during the day? It’s ok to sacrifice sleep but not a few calories throughout the day so you can reach your weight loss goal.

You know exactly why you aren’t losing weight. You snack too much. You eat mindlessly particularly at work. You have been lazy about measuring out portions and you tend to overdo portion size. You have been using your exercise as an excuse to eat more. Life has been busy lately so eating has been done on the run. You haven’t been diligent about planning healthy meals and therefore meals aren’t always satisfying which leaves you going back for more later.

You have always said that your weight issues are a result of eating too much of the wrong food. You have now proved that you can deter weight loss by eating too much of the right food. Your food choices are overall very healthy, but you still need to monitor portions. For example nut butter is not to be enjoyed with a spoon. OK there I’ve said it. You know you do it. A taste here, a taste there. It adds up.

You’re almost 40 years old. You have changed your diet immensely from your days of not eating vegetables. You have committed yourself to daily physical activity. Thanks to the running your body has changed and toned. Your clothing fits better and you feel better about the way you look. You have done everything you have set your mind to except this one thing. Stop making excuses and do this! You have all the tools you need to accomplish this goal. Your weight does not define you, but you know that you will feel better, run faster, and be internally healthier once you lose this last 20 pounds.

No more excuses girl! You can do this.

Love,

Yourself – your biggest fan, your reality check, your truth teller

Friend Makin’ Monday: Habits

I haven’t done a Friend Makin’ Monday Post in a few weeks. I may actually get this one done on Monday this time.

If you’ve taken part in FMM then you know the rules. If you’re new, please take a moment to answer this week’s question on your own blog then add your link in the comments section at: www.alltheweigh.com so everyone can see your FMM questions and answers. The idea is to connect with other awesome bloggers.

FMM: Habits

  1. Are you proactive, or do you procrastinate?  I think for the most part I am very proactive. However, there are some tasks that I might procrastinate a while before getting to them like cleaning the basement.
  2. Do you eat breakfast everyday? If so, what’s a typical meal like? Yes I have always loved breakfast. I typically eat oatmeal or yogurt with fruit. Sometimes I will have a smoothie.
  3. How much time do you spend watching TV on an average day?  None. I really mean it. I stopped watching TV a number of years ago. I don’t miss it. I don’t really have time for it anyway. If I watch anything it’s on the computer while I’m doing other things. Right now I only watch the Biggest Loser online and it takes me 2-3 days to watch an episode.
  4. Do you talk on the phone, or do you prefer e-mail and/or text messages?  I miss chit chatting on the phone, but no one really does that anymore. That said I love email and texting is definitely growing on me.
  5. Do you exercise in the morning, afternoon or evening? I generally exercise in the morning, but if I can’t then I will do it whenever possible.
  6. Do you take time for yourself regularly? As a stay at home mom and full time night shift nurse I do take time out for myself regularly. It is so important. I spend most of my “me” time running. It is cherished time alone with my music and my thoughts. I also make time to have my hair cut and colored regularly and I get monthly pedicures in the summer.
  7. How often do you make your bed? Everyday. I should say my bed is made everyday. My husband makes it on the mornings that I’m at work.
  8. Do you plan meals? If so, how far in advance?  I try to plan on the weekend for the following week, but I’m doing a very poor job of that lately. I’m working on improving this because I know it helps me throughout the week when I do it. I have more time to do other things and it makes me feel more relaxed.
  9. Do you wake up at the same time everyday? Considering I work nights I don’t sleep at the same time everyday. On the nights that I’m home I wake up when the bug wakes up! Carlos is usually up around 5:45-6. When I am working I sleep from about 4:45pm-10pm.
  10. How often do you brush your teeth?  I usually brush first thing in the morning, again after breakfast and at night before bed or work. I tend to brush around 5am when I am working.

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. Things were a bit somber here in Western Mass last night. We are all huge Patriot’s fans in my family. We watched the Super Bowl at my Mom’s. For some bizarre reason my stepfather is a New York fan even though he was born and raised here, but it made for some good lighthearted banter throughout the game. Fortunately none of us take it too serious.

Any thoughts on Madonna’s performance? I was a huge huge fan of hers growing up. I saw her in concert as a teen ager. I thought she was just the best thing. Not so much last night.

Have a great Monday!

Aimee’s and Marion’s Excellent Food Journaling Adventure!

I have been trying to get back into weight loss mode for some time now. Over the last 5 years I have successfully lost 60 pounds and kept it off. However, I still have around 15-20 pounds to lose to be at a healthy weight. One thing that has always helped me to lose weight is journaling my food. For some reason I just haven’t been able to get back into it…until now. Sometimes things just click into place like this new food journaling adventure with my great blog friend Marion from Affection for Fitness. She is such an inspiration to me. She is positive, motivating and genuine. Her blog posts are intelligent and thought provoking. If you haven’t read her blog I highly recommend that you visit. She recently wrote a post about flaking out. After reading it and contemplating it for a while, I commented that:

I begin each day with the best intentions that today is the day I buckle down, start that food journal and get serious about shedding those last 20 pounds. A few days later a Weight Watchers coupon comes in the mail and I remember how I’m supposed to be taking charge of my eating, cleaning it up and controlling my portion sizes. I contemplate a return to WW but then I convince myself that I have the tools right here in this brain of mine to do what it takes to get this weight off once and for all. I know I will feel better and I will run faster without the excess weight. I know the doctor will be pleased with my efforts. I know I will love the results because I will better than ever. Yet nothing ever seems to happen. My scale has bounced around the same 4 pounds for months now. Up/down and the cycles continues. So why am I such a flake?

I do think, in my case that there is a correlation between food management and my flakiness if you will. I’ve got the fitness part of healthy living under control, but I still struggle with the food aspect. It’s as though I use my activity as an excuse to eat without limits.

I know this wasn’t written with me in mind, but if it was I would say thank you for calling me out on a really bad habit and for providing some realistic tips to help me curb this terrible behavior.

Marion asked if I would be interested in doing a journal exchange on our blogs. I jumped at the idea and so this adventure was born.  As of February 1, 2012 I have started keeping a food journal again some of which I will be posting about here two or three times a week. Marion will be doing the same on her blog. We will be linking to each other’s posts. To make this somewhat mundane task more fun and interesting we will talk about the following topics:

  1. Food Eaten
  2. Reflection/Readings/Thoughts
  3. Attack Before It Attacks You (Stress management ideas)
  4. Failing to Plan is Planning to Fail (strategies/plans/rules we are using)
  5. Girls Just Want To Have Fun! (fun non-food things we are doing)
The credit for the design and title of our project goes to Marion, but it’s as though she read my mind. I am in a place in my health journey where I really want to analyze the food I eat, the decisions I make related to food and how I can improve my diet so I begin to lose weight again and more importantly keep it off.
As a former Weight Watcher I loved the idea of the meetings, but I always left feeling somewhat cheated and disappointed. The leaders are clearly following a lesson plan of sorts for the meeting and once they got through their material there was little time for anything else. What I wanted was to hear about how everyone was doing, not just weight loss or gain. I wanted to know about anything helpful they might have learned over the week, successes, new recipes or healthy low point snacks. This will be almost like the WW meeting I always dreamed of.

To get this show on the road here is my food journal from yesterday, February 2, 2012.
1. Food Eaten
Breakfast
  • 1/2 cup quinoa
  • 1 – 5.3 oz. container of plain nonfat Oikos Greek Yogurt
  • 1/3 cup blackberries
  • 1 T slivered almonds
  • 1 tsp almond butter
  • cinnamon and 1 tsp Agave
Lunch
  • Smoothie with a banana, 2 T light cottage cheese, 1 T pumpkin, 1/2 cup rice milk and 1 scoop Amazing Grass chocolate powder
  • an apple

Snack

  • a handful of blackberries
  • a Hershey’s mini

Dinner

  • Veggie Coconut Curry compliments of this incredible recipe from Ashley of Edible Perspective served over a 1/2 cup brown rice

Evening Snack

  • 2 black bean brownies (I had a free coupon for Duncan Hines mixes. I bought one for chocolate brownies and mixed the batter with only a can of black beans and water, then baked per instructions. First you would never know there were beans in there. Secondly it tasted as sinful as it was! Lastly husband and son approved.)
2. Reflection/Readings/Thoughts
Reflections: I definitely didn’t need the 2 brownies. I justified the first as a taste test before my family was subjected to such horror! The second was just because I wanted more.
Readings: I read this article in the New York Times a while ago and wanted to post about it, but I didn’t get around to it. It’s called “Is Sugar Toxic?” by Gary Taubes and addresses the link between processed sugar and their negative impact on the body. I have thought about trying to go cold turkey to eliminate as much sugar as possible from my diet, but that isn’t realistic for me. I just don’t work that way. I’m hoping to explore ideas and solutions through my food journal.
Thoughts: I wasn’t hungry at all. I was satisfied and really enjoyed my food.
3.  Attack Before It Attacks You (Stress management ideas)
In thinking about the brownie issue I wonder if simply letting my husband know that I only wanted to eat one might have decreased the urge to go for that second? It wouldn’t hurt to try this in the future.
4.  Failing to Plan is Planning to Fail (strategies/plans/rules we are using)
Carlos and I were out running errands and we ended up being gone longer than expected. I didn’t have any snacks on hand which is unlike me. Thus the mini Hershey’s bar eaten at my grandmother’s. She’s a bit like a candy pusher! We were there very briefly and it was like her parting gift. One for me, one for Carlos! Not good 😦
5. Girls Just Want To Have Fun! (fun non-food things we are doing)
Want to see what Carlos and I have been up to this week?

Carlos on ice!

It's just like riding a bike...no really!

Carlos starts ice skating lessons tomorrow, but he missed the first few classes so I thought it would be a good idea to try it out before his lesson. Oh my goodness so much fun! I haven’t ice skated in probably 30 years but I was quite proud of myself. I didn’t fall once. We’ve been twice since Wednesday!
