Friend Makin’ Mondays: Uniquely You

This weekend flew by. Carlos had a soccer game on Saturday, two soccer games and ice skating on Sunday. I am in the midst of working a six nights so that I can extend my days off at the end of the week. I’ve been cranking along with marathon training. My runs have been really great lately. I love my new new running tank tops. I wish the weather would stay warm enough to keep wearing them. I’m hoping Philly has a mild warm front the day of the marathon.

Uniquely You

 

1) Do you prefer to talk or text?

I actually prefer to text. I love my iPhone but the phone quality stinks and it’s often difficult to hear people or worse the call gets dropped. Plus I communicate better in writing.

2) How often do you make your bed?

Absolutely everyday! Most days my husband makes the beds because I get home after he and Carlos get up.

3) What sounds do you hear right now?

The hum of the washing machine in the basement. It’s awfully quiet now that the little guy is in school all day.

4) List three things that you always carry with you.

iPhone, water and keys (No I don’t carry my wallet all the time especially when I go running. One car break in was enough!)

5) What are your favorite TV shows?

I just discovered Drop Dead Diva on Netflix and love it. I also like the Amazing Race though I missed last season. Hopefully I can watch the new season online. I love How I Met Your Mother, but I haven’t seen any of last season so no spoilers please!

6) Is there a hobby that you’d like to devote more time to?

I would love to have time to learn more about photography.

7) What is your favorite drink?

Water

8) Share a couple of cool facts about your family.

My sister and my son have the same birthday. My grandmother and I have the same birthday.

9) List one thing that you will do for yourself today.

I will run 10 miles.

10) Share something that you’re thankful for today.

I’m always thankful for my husband and son so I will go with something else. I am thankful to have a job I enjoy and wonderful, supportive co-workers (they don’t even mind me blabbing about running).

Fall Favorites

 

1. What is your favorite thing about this time of year?  I love the colors, smells and feel of fall. I love settling back into sweaters and jeans. I love the cool crisp air. You can’t beat running in the fall. Ok I can’t choose just one thing I love about fall. It’s my favorite time of year.

2. What do you hope to do again before Summer is officially over? Too late it’s officially over! However, next week we are hoping to catch a little extra summer before winter arrives so I will be getting a pedicure and breaking out the flip flops, bathing suit and summer dresses for a short time.

3. When did you last go on a hay ride?  A few weeks ago at the orchard where we went apple picking.

4. What is your favorite pumpkin dish?  I love pumpkin bread, pumpkin cookies, pumpkin in my oats, pumpkin in my yogurt but I’m not a big fan of pumpkin pie.

5. Do you decorate your home for fall?  I do. I am beginning to restore my fall decoration collection after finding my bin of decorations moldy and wet a few years ago. I must have left the lid open when I put them away the season before. I try to buy one nice decoration each year. I also attempt to put a few pots of mums out on the front steps.

6. Do you have any hobbies that are seasonally specific? If so, what are they?  No, I don’t have any fall hobbies but I enjoy doing activities common in the fall like apple picking, picking out pumpkins, corn mazes and leaf peeping.

7. Apple cider or hot chocolate? Hot apple cider with a cinnamon stick. Hot chocolate is a winter treat for me.

8. Are you a fan of football?  If so, who is your team?  I do like football. I just don’t have the time to watch it. I am a New England Patriots fan. Yes even after the crap they played yesterday and last Sunday. I’m also a UMass Amherst alum and would love to start going to a game or two each fall, but they just went up a division and now play in Foxboro, MA at Gillette Stadium where the Patriot’s play which is about 90 minutes away. They’re not very good, but I guess if they want to play in a higher division they have to have a bigger stadium.

9. Share a fond Fall memory.  My best fall memories have been made since Carlos was born. Now we do all of those “fall things” together and have lots of photos to cherish the memories. Probably the best fall memories are made by jumping in the leaves. It makes me a kid again. We enjoy the gorgeous fall hikes in our area. We did a really fun corn maze last year. Carving the annual jack-o-lantern with Carlos is always a blast. He has made my favorite time of year a million times better.

10. It’s not Fall until…The leaves start crunching under my feet. On Saturday, Carlos and I took a long walk on a new to us bike trail and we both seemed to notice at the same time that the leaves were crunching under our feet because we looked at each other and said “it’s fall.” What have I done to this poor child? It seems Carlos loves the fall too.

Friend Makin’ Mondays: Blog Stuff

We had a nice weekend. The weather was gorgeous, felt like fall. A friend from my Peace Corps days spent the weekend here. He was content with just hanging out and going with the flow of our plans. I get the feeling from a few of my friends that they find my home relaxing and come here to sort of get away from the hustle and bustle of their lives. This makes me happy. So we didn’t do anything terribly exciting. We went to a busy farm store and bought some local Macintosh apples, apple cider and corn on the cob. Carlos had his first soccer practice of the season. I ran an awesome 6 miles on Sunday.

Tonight we are going to an Ice Cream Social for my son’s school. The teacher said he had a great today and an excellent nap. Kindergarten really tires him out because he hasn’t taken naps in almost 2 years. He’s always been a good sleeper though.  Blog Stuff

1.  Have you ever met anyone through your blog that led to an in-person friendship/relationship? No.

2.  Most bloggers have a specific niche.  What would you discuss if it didn’t seem inappropriate on your blog? I would talk about my job more often if not for HIPAA (privacy) laws.

3. If you could meet three bloggers, who would they be? Honestly I would love to meet all the bloggers I read, but for the sake of answering the question I will name 3. I would love to meet Biz, Marion and Carina. I think each of these women exemplify strength, intelligence and dedication. I also appreciate their support and honest opinions.

4. If you had to choose between Facebook or Twitter which one would you choose?  Facebook, though I have a love/hate relationship with it. I tweet every now and then, but I feel like I’m invisible out there. I enjoy some of the articles I find via Twitter. Other than that I am not sure I really grasp the concept of Twitter.

5. Do you vlog (video blog?) No.

6. How many blogs do you read on an average day? I read about 15 blogs regularly, but not all of the bloggers post daily.

7.  What is the coolest thing that you’ve seen online recently? I recently read this interesting article about how technology keeps us connected nearly all the time.

8. If you gave your blog a new name what would it be? I would probably just use my real name.

9. Have you ever attended a blog conference like Fitbloggin?  If not, would you? I would love to attend Fitbloggin though I think I would feel a bit out of place.

10. In the past I have asked why you blog.  Now I want to know why you read blogs?  What do you take from it?  I read blogs that I find helpful, interesting, and inspiring. I find 99% of the recipes I make from blogs I read. I love reading about people’s journeys to a healthier life. I enjoy learning about different ideas and experiences.

Friend Makin’ Mondays: Summertime

This summer seems to be flying by. Carlos starts his first day of Kindergarten on August 29th. At this rate we will be there before we know it. There has been a lot of sun, tons of swimming, play dates, hikes, walks and fireworks. Today Carlos begins camp. I signed him up for a few different morning camps. This one is at a local park. The do arts and crafts, games, play on the playground, etc. It runs from 9am to noon which is just enough time for me to run, shower and do a few errands.

Carlos also takes swimming lessons Monday, Wednesday and Friday in the afternoon. They are learning strokes this summer. One of the best things I think you can do for your child is teach them to swim. We have an incredible program in town taught by my elderly neighbor. He has been teaching these lessons for over 50 years. He doesn’t use any flotation devices. You watch and think there is no way my child will learn to swim like this, but lo and behold they do. The goal of the beginner session is for the kids to swim (doggie paddle) from the deep end of the pool to the shallow end. This is a pool used for swim meets so it’s long. Carlos did it last summer so he is now in the next level of classes. I like how they continue to work with the kids once they know how to swim. Swimming is such a great activity and boy does it tire the kids out! Sleep has been absolutely no trouble this summer. In fact Carlos is usually asking us if he can go to bed by 7 o’clock.

So it’s been busy around here, but a good busy. Carlos and I have an awesome weekend coming up. I will be sure to blog about it. It involves dragons and a lot of color! This week’s Friend Makin’ Mondays topic couldn’t be more appropriate.

Summertime

1. What is your favorite thing about Summer? Being outdoors all the time.

2. What is your favorite outdoor activity? Running

3. If you had to choose, would you prefer to be too hot or too cold? I would choose too cold as long as I could bundle up with as much clothing and as many blankets as I like. I would choose too hot if I could live near water.

4. Does your appetite increase or decrease during warmer months? Does it stay the same?  My appetite graciously decreases in summer. I crave fruit and salads. I hate having to cook in the summer, but I do it anyway.

5. What is your favorite seasonal Summer fruit? Berries. We went blueberry picking yesterday and scored about 10 pounds!!

6. Would you prefer to spend a hot summer day at the mall or at a swimming pool? The pool definitely.

7. Are you more likely to tan or sunburn? I burn, but with sunblock I develop a nice glowing tan by the end of the summer.

8. How does your routine change when Summer begins? Carlos doesn’t have school in the summer so life gets even busier. I have had to rely on babysitters, early mornings and evenings for getting my workouts in. As I mentioned above we stay pretty busy during the summer. There is a lot more going on for kids in the summer. We spend a lot of time either at my mom’s pool, spray parks or at our favorite local lake with friends. To me summer is about being outside as much as possible.

9. What is the temperature outside where you are today? 82 degrees and climbing

10.  What is your favorite Summer holiday? My birthday at the end of August?! I guess I would have to say 4th of July though we don’t really do anything all that exciting.

Five Friday Favorites

I absolutely love reading those posts where bloggers mention current favorite things in their lives. The posts are fun and often introduce me to something new. So I thought I would give it a try with just a handful of things I’m enjoying these days.

  1. Victoria Secret’s Love is Heavenly fragrance. I’ve never been complimented on a scent I’ve worn until I started wearing this. My husband and my son were practically taking turns sniffing me the first time I wore it!
  2. The Orchestra App which is essentially a “to do” list. I like the voice activated command feature which allows you to speak your tasks while the app automatically jots them down. You can assign tasks to different people like I do with my husband. Orchestra will email or text the person the information. With a quick touch you check off items once completed. I’m always experimenting with new ways to stay organized and this has proven to be very useful and user friendly.
  3. Vega One Nutritional Shake in Chai Vanilla flavor. I love the flavor of this, warm and spicy. It is not gritty or chalky once blended into a smoothie. The flavor is light yet adds enough sweetness that I do not add any sweetener to it. It is vegan as well as gluten, dairy and soy free. Probably the only downfall is the price. It is about $60 for a 30 oz. container. To offset the price I usually use only half a scoop. I’ve tried other protein powders and shake mixes, but this is by far my favorite.
  4. The extended service plan from Radio Shack.  My son has quite possibly gone through more headphones in his short life than I have owned in my long life. OK maybe not, but close! About 2 months ago I bought him yet a new pair of headphones from Radio Shack because we had a road trip and well, there are only so many times I can listen to the dialogue from Cars 2 shrieking in the backseat. The cashier asked if I would like to purchase the extended service plan for $1. I’m not big on warranties and things like this. They tend to be difficult to use and not worth the money, but I decided to go for it given the sheer number of headphones we’ve replaced this year alone. Lo and behold about 6 weeks after buying the headphones they broke. Now my son assures me it’s not his fault so it probably was his doing, but that doesn’t matter because we have an extended service plan. We popped back into Radio Shack, provided some information and in about a week my son had a brand new pair of headphones at no charge. OK that’s not entirely true. I paid the $1 to get a new extended service plan. Well worth it in my opinion.
  5. If you don’t follow Satu at Bodycapable.com you should head over there. She writes about her journey to live a healthy lifestyle despite the challenge of having a sedentary desk job. Her posts are often based on articles and books she has read and provide thought provoking information. Yesterday she put up a post that, I am honored to say, features my fitness story. FMM: Q & A

1. Share one thing that has changed about you since you began blogging.  I’ve discovered a genuine network of support and encouragement which has motivated me to continue setting fitness goals and keep trying to accomplish my weight loss goals.

2. If you were forced to give up chocolate or potato chips for an entire year which one would you choose to live without? I don’t eat potato chips so that would be the easier of the two to give up, but realistically I should give up chocolate. I really love chocolate.

3. What’s more attractive?  A man in a suit, or a man in uniform?  I love a man in uniform! However, my husband does clean up quite nicely when he has to wear a suit.

4. If you could be a guest star on a reality show which one would it be? The Amazing Race. My husband and I would make a great team plus we have a cool story of how we met and we tend to disagree about things like directions and instructions which would lend just the right amount of bickering to the show.

5. What is the last meal that you prepared for yourself?  Rice and beans Mozambican style.

6. Is your hair colored, or is it natural?  I started going gray at age 25 so my hair is colored as closely to my natural color as possible.

7. If you could leave town today and go anywhere, where would you go? Anywhere would be fine! I always love visiting Mozambique. Life is slower there. I can actually shut myself off to technology and relax.

8. Do you prefer to exercise at the gym, at home or outside? I prefer to run outside, do strength training at the gym and the occasional work out DVD at home. If I could only do one it would be outside.

9. Have you ever asked someone out on a date?  No, but my husband would disagree and say I pursued him. He lies!

10. How many cups of coffee do you drink on an average day? I only drink coffee at work and usually I drink 2 small cups per shift.

11. Do you pack lightly, or do you over pack?  Well b.c. (before Carlos) I packed lightly. When my husband and I go away just the two of us we strive to bring only one carry on each and are usually successful. This is very rare though. Generally we are traveling with Carlos and packing lightly is nearly impossible. First it was diapers, wipes and formula and now it’s electronics, gigantic stuffed bunny and a million changes of clothing because boys get dirty very quickly! I keep trying to pare it down though.

12. What color are your nails now?  Clear polish in need of a manicure. Light pink on toes in desperate need of a pedicure.

13. If you could have lunch with one notable (living) person who inspires you who would it be?  This is the most difficult question for me. I am inspired by so many amazing people. I am particularly inspired by young people who are motivating change in their communities and beyond. I would have lunch with any one of the kids mentioned on the Kids Are Heroes website including its organizer 13 year old MaryMargaret who launched the website in 2008 with the help of her Dad, Gabe.

14. Who is your favorite professional athlete? Papi David Ortiz! Go Red Sox!!

15. Gum or mints?  Mints. I really hate hearing people chew loudly so I try not to offend. If offered I will take a piece of gum because I worry the person is trying to tell me something. Gum on a plane is a must also.

16. Have you ever eaten crawfish? Yes in Mozambique they have giant crawfish (though I called them crayfish and after a few google searches learned they are essentially the same thing).

17. List one or more human characteristics that are a complete turn-off.  Just one?! Laziness is at the top of my list. Move it!

18.  What is your favorite season? I adore fall. I love the smells, the colors and the cool crisp air.

19. Do you prefer to shake hands or hug?  I’m very affectionate with my husband and son, but outside of family I prefer to shake hands.

20. Can you quote lines from Saved by the Bell from memory?  If so, what’s your favorite?  No I never  remember lines from anything. I admit that I did watch the show.

Racing

I haven’t run a race since the marathon. On Saturday, I am running the Holyoke St. Patrick’s Day 10K. Today when I was picking up Carlos from preschool I had to make my way around cones in the road that were protecting the freshly painted shamrocks along the race and parade route. From everything I’ve heard about the race it sounds like one of the best spectated races to run. I’m excited about it and unusually nervous. The route is quite hilly. I always strive to do better each race I run, however, this time I’m not overly optimistic that I will achieve a 10K PR on this race.

I have been training for this race since a couple of weeks after the marathon. I adapted my training plan following this Hal Higdon Intermediate 10K Training Guide. Wednesdays were my speed training days. Saturdays or Sundays were my longer run days, though I also threw in a few longer runs of more than 5 miles during the week. Like last winter I have maintained a promise to myself to run at least one double digit run a month. I did a 10 miler in February and I have already completed a 10 miler in March. Initially I was also doing plyometrics and weight training at least once a week.

I have had some mental ups and downs with running since the marathon. One of my running goals is to improve on my time, particularly my 10K time. I’m striving to get my 10K time just under 60 minutes. My current 10K PR is 1:04:16 from the 2011 Shelburne Falls Bridge of Flowers Race. I plan to run this race again in August. It is a challenging race with a very large mountain hill that spans almost all of mile 3. It’s a pretty course and the race festivities are very family friendly and it’s the only race I’ve run more than once. This year I’m hoping to really push myself in order to come close to a sub-1 hour 10K.

My intention was to see some improvement with my time throughout this training. Things were going well. My time was getting better and I was consistently running under a 10 minute mile. Then I took an entire week off from training when my son was on school vacation and ever since I haven’t been running the same. I never blame anything other than myself for my short comings. For whatever reason I got really focused on my weight which only backfires on me. The more I obsess about my weight it seems I only fail to lose weight. The mental game got a bit out of control. I felt fat. My legs felt heavy.  I gave myself permission to run slower to accommodate how I was feeling. Life has been busier than usual and I stopped making time for plyometrics and weight training. Instead of progressing with my training I regressed in many ways.

I am committed to running on Saturday. PR or no PR I will have fun and run the best race that I can. One thing that hasn’t changed is how much I love running. With the early appearance of spring this week I have been enjoying outdoor runs again. I’m more centered. I’ve been intermittently tracking my food intake on Spark People just to stay accountable and to understand where I might be overdoing it. I have put away the scale for now. I’ve also started packing up all the negative thoughts. Spring is here and it’s time for a fresh start.

So starting next week I hope to resume my regular training posts as I begin training for my 4th half marathon. On May 5th I will be running the Shelburne, VT spring half marathon.

 

 

Friend Makin’ Mondays: Getting to Know You

I am awaiting some photos from my friends who were at the finish line of the marathon, but I am working on my recap post. I am hoping to have it up this weekend. Right now I’m relaxing in Ft. Lauderdale, FL at my Dad’s. Carlos is having a great time playing with his Grandpa. My husband unfortunately had to return home on Sunday to go back to work on Monday. This has been a fabulous vacation so far. The best part is that I don’t have to return to work until Sunday night. So I will have a few days after I return home to settle in and get organized for the week ahead.

1) What is one of your favorite ways to spend a Saturday? I enjoy going for a long run in the morning. Then it depends on my husband’s work schedule and Carlos’ activities for the day. I just kind of go with the flow. I absolutely love when we can all do something as a family like go for a hike or go for a drive to someplace new. I also love to visit with family.

2) List your top three favorite TV shows.  I honestly don’t watch TV, but I do try to follow the Amazing Race and the Biggest Loser online. I also love House Hunters International and I usually catch about 10 minutes of it with my husband before I go to work at night.

3) Would you rather be in pictures or take them? Oh take them definitely, but this is something I am working on. When my son was almost a year old I was going through all the photos of his first year to put together photo books and calendars for Christmas gifts. I realized sadly that there were few photos of the two of us. I always avoided photos because I hated the way I looked in them, but I didn’t want my son’s life to be devoid of photographic memories of me. This was part of the reason I decided to start living a healthier lifestyle. One of my goals for this year is to have professional family photos done before the holidays.

4) Why do you blog? I started this blog to document my marathon training. It has been a really fun experience and I plan to continue blogging now that the marathon is over.

5) Share five websites that you visit regularly…

OK this is a boring list I know. Yahoo is where I get most of my email. Strange to think I’ve had my Yahoo email account since 1996. CNN for a quick check of the news because a girl’s got to stay in tuned to the world! Amazon is my go to place for online shopping. Twitter just because it fascinates me. My home page on my web browser is set to my iGoogle account where I can scan my Google Reader, Gmail, Gcal and my to do list. Of course I also visit my favorite blogs regularly.

6) If you could have lunch with one person from your Twitter list who would it be? Right now it would have to be Hal Higdon @higdonmarathon. I followed his training plans for my first half marathon and my first marathon. He has run 111 marathons so he certainly knows what he’s talking about. I felt very prepared in both cases and I would love to thank him in person and hear all about his incredible experiences both as a runner and a long time writer.

7) List a few of your favorite snacks. Fruit, granola bars and nuts. I also enjoy baking healthy snacks.

8 ) Do you have a pet? If so, what kind? No we don’t have any pets.

9) Which three material possessions would you struggle to live without? My iPhone, iPod and my laptop.

10) What’s your favorite drink? I am a water girl, just plain old water.

11) Do you enjoy cooking? Yes I love cooking. It’s a relatively new hobby for me and I credit the blog world for inspiring me to start cooking. I’ve grown more adventurous and ambitious in the kitchen.

12) Do you have children? I have one adorable 5 year old son.

13) What are your favorite hobbies? Cooking, reading, hiking and running.

14) Would you consider yourself to be shy or outgoing? I think I’m outgoing for the most part but I can be reserved at times.

15) If you could change one thing about yourself, what would you change? I would stop sweating the small stuff (oh and of course lose those last 15-20 pounds!).

16) Who is your favorite actor/actress? I don’t really have a favorite actor or actress.

17) What’s the coolest thing you’ve done this week?  I ran my first marathon!!!

18) Do you live near your family or far from them? I live about 15 minutes from my Mom and my Grandmother. My sister is about an hour and 15 minutes away. My Dad lives in Florida which is a 3 hour plane ride away. My in-laws live in Mozambique.

19) List three of your talents. When I think of talent I think of the arts. There are few things I am decent at though. I think I’m a pretty good mother. I’m a really good listener. I also have good organizational skills.

20) What is your greatest attribute? Determination!

Friend Makin’ Mondays: I Am

 

I really enjoy taking part in Friend Makin’ Mondays even though I don’t get a chance to do it until Tuesday. It’s a nice break from all the running talk. FMM: I am…

1. I am good at…listening to others. I really am. I actually look at people when they are talking to me. I am engaged in what they are saying rather than drifting off into my own world. I let people finish a sentence or an entire paragraph without interrupting.

2. I am happy when…I see my son’s face or hear his voice. He just makes me smile.

3. I am working on…loving myself for who I am right now.

4. I am interested in…a million things! Right now my interests are running, learning to cook and bake vegan, and improving my really crappy photography skills.

5. I am always…awake?! That was the first thing that came to mind. It often feels like I’m always awake because I work nights.

6. I am enjoying…blogging. I was a bit on the fence about it in the beginning, but I enjoy it a lot. It’s a great outlet for all of the many thoughts I have and it’s been a fun way for me to document my marathon training.

7. I am in…my kitchen in Western Massachusetts. Boring!

8. I am readingBorn to Run by Christopher McDougall. It is interesting enough that I want to finish it but it is definitely not gripping enough to keep me from putting it down. There are so many books I would like to read just have a look at my Good Reads To Read Shelf.

9. I am concerned about…my husband who was just laid off yesterday. He is a mason and winter layoffs are expected, but this one came as a surprise and much sooner than anticipated. We plan for it financially each year, but I always worry about his spirit when this happens. He is a hard worker and likes to have a routine. It’s not even 9am here and my husband has already left to meet with his union representative to see about other work in the area. Deep down I know everything will be ok, it always is, but initially the layoff creates a worry in me. Of course it is always around the holidays which makes it more frustrating.

10. I am looking forward to…the Disney Marathon and our Florida vacation. Seriously after my 22 mile run on Sunday I am so ready for this race!

Winter?

Winter decided to make an early appearance over the weekend as a fierce Noreaster whipped through Massachusetts taking down trees, branches, power lines, cable wires and utility poles leaving hundreds of thousands without power or heat. My son and I escaped to my sister’s house in the eastern part of the state which didn’t get hit nearly as hard. My wonderful husband stayed home to tend to the disaster that was our yard. He also helped out at my mom’s house. Fortunately we have a wood stove so my husband was toasty warm at night.

Our power came back Monday night. The worst of it for us was the damage in the yard, a refrigerator and freezer full of food that had to be thrown away, and flooding in our basement. We are very lucky considering how much damage and destruction there is in our area.

Of little importance is the fact that we do not have cable or Internet. My iPhone service has been questionable as well. As soon as things improve I will be back with posts.
