This summer seems to be flying by. Carlos starts his first day of Kindergarten on August 29th. At this rate we will be there before we know it. There has been a lot of sun, tons of swimming, play dates, hikes, walks and fireworks. Today Carlos begins camp. I signed him up for a few different morning camps. This one is at a local park. The do arts and crafts, games, play on the playground, etc. It runs from 9am to noon which is just enough time for me to run, shower and do a few errands.
Carlos also takes swimming lessons Monday, Wednesday and Friday in the afternoon. They are learning strokes this summer. One of the best things I think you can do for your child is teach them to swim. We have an incredible program in town taught by my elderly neighbor. He has been teaching these lessons for over 50 years. He doesn’t use any flotation devices. You watch and think there is no way my child will learn to swim like this, but lo and behold they do. The goal of the beginner session is for the kids to swim (doggie paddle) from the deep end of the pool to the shallow end. This is a pool used for swim meets so it’s long. Carlos did it last summer so he is now in the next level of classes. I like how they continue to work with the kids once they know how to swim. Swimming is such a great activity and boy does it tire the kids out! Sleep has been absolutely no trouble this summer. In fact Carlos is usually asking us if he can go to bed by 7 o’clock.
So it’s been busy around here, but a good busy. Carlos and I have an awesome weekend coming up. I will be sure to blog about it. It involves dragons and a lot of color! This week’s Friend Makin’ Mondays topic couldn’t be more appropriate.
If you have taken part in FMM then you know the rules. If you’re new, please take a moment to answer this week’s questions on your own blog then add your link in the comments section at: www.alltheweigh.com so others can see your FMM questions and answers. The idea is to connect with other awesome bloggers by posting your own FMM post and commenting on a couple of other posts. Now it’s time for this week’s topic!
Summertime
1. What is your favorite thing about Summer? Being outdoors all the time.
2. What is your favorite outdoor activity? Running
3. If you had to choose, would you prefer to be too hot or too cold? I would choose too cold as long as I could bundle up with as much clothing and as many blankets as I like. I would choose too hot if I could live near water.
4. Does your appetite increase or decrease during warmer months? Does it stay the same? My appetite graciously decreases in summer. I crave fruit and salads. I hate having to cook in the summer, but I do it anyway.
5. What is your favorite seasonal Summer fruit? Berries. We went blueberry picking yesterday and scored about 10 pounds!!
6. Would you prefer to spend a hot summer day at the mall or at a swimming pool? The pool definitely.
7. Are you more likely to tan or sunburn? I burn, but with sunblock I develop a nice glowing tan by the end of the summer.
8. How does your routine change when Summer begins? Carlos doesn’t have school in the summer so life gets even busier. I have had to rely on babysitters, early mornings and evenings for getting my workouts in. As I mentioned above we stay pretty busy during the summer. There is a lot more going on for kids in the summer. We spend a lot of time either at my mom’s pool, spray parks or at our favorite local lake with friends. To me summer is about being outside as much as possible.
9. What is the temperature outside where you are today? 82 degrees and climbing
10. What is your favorite Summer holiday? My birthday at the end of August?! I guess I would have to say 4th of July though we don’t really do anything all that exciting.
I hope you are enjoying your summer too. Now it’s your turn to answer this week’s questions. Don’t forget to visit Kenlie’s blog and link up in the comments!
Kindergarten already, wow! Was there sunblock in Mozambique or did you bring your own supply?
I know I feel like Carlos just started preschool. Peace Corps supplied us with sunblock when I was there as a volunteer. You can buy it in the capitol but it is expensive so now we always bring our own.
It’s a shame that it’s expensive, but I know that’s the least of many problems there.
Hannah learned to swim at a sports day camp when she was 5 – she’s a total fish now and I wish I could swim like her! I agree, it is the best gift to have kids be comfortable around water.
Wow, kindergarten! How fun! That was the only time Hannah ever missed school – she got the chicken pox in kindergarten, other than that, she’s never missed a day of school – even college!
Hope you have a great week Aimee!
Wow good for Hannah. Dedication is such a special quality. It’s hard to find these days.
10 pounds of blueberries! Very cool. My sister planted a blueberry bush in our garden (our yards connect, and we have an area in the middle that we share where we planted tons of veggies in containers), and we’re lucky if we get 5 berries at one time. LOL!
My younger niece is also starting Kindergarten this fall – fun times!!
Enjoy the rest of summer!!
Our neighbor had blueberry bushes where I grew up. He always caught us eating them. He acted mad but I’m pretty sure he didn’t really care. Now I just have to get creative with all of these blueberries. I will be freezing some for sure.
It’s such a joy to watch a kid in the water! My daughter (now 14) has gone to the lake with my sister a zillion times without me, so when I did get to go, I was amazed to see her confidence jumping off the boat and swiming over to someone on a waverunner, etc.
Stopping in from FMM – hi!
Hi Lisa! Welcome. Swimming kids is what summer is all about to me. We had a family lake house when I was growing up and I remember spending entire days in the water.
Have fun with your colorful weekend! 🙂 The summer will be over before you know it … enjoy your time with him!
Thanks Jane. The jam packed days are fun, but I also throw in a few “home” days as I call them. Today is one of them. We don’t plan anything and take our time to enjoy the day. Hope you are having a nice summer so far.
10 pounds of blueberries. I’m jealous. You can make so many great things/just enjoy with a bowl of milk like cereal. Lovely.
I love blueberries in cereal. So simple, but so delicious. I could also probably just eat them by the handful.
HI Aimee! Well, Carlos is getting big! All my 4 kids are gone somewhere this week. The two teen kids are at camp. The other two–in different states. I’m honestly a little envious of you having a little kid around.
🙂 Marion
Half day camp is perfect. It’s only 3 hours, just enough to get my workout done and maybe one or two errands or a shower (sometimes I have to choose!). I am soaking up every minute with Carlos. I feel like it was just yesterday that I was pushing a baby carriage. Soon he will be taller than me! Where does the time go?
I agree that this summer is going by fast! I love to swim, definitely my favorite summer activity, and I’ll for sure have my future kiddos in swim lessons as well.
10 lbs of blueberries!? I like blueberries, but they aren’t my favorite. For awhile we were getting a ton of them in our CSA and I was running out of ways to use them up, and obviously didn’t even think to freeze them..duh! haha
I’ll post about something I just made with the blueberries. So delicious!
The little girl I’ve been babysitting this summer just finished her first waterbabies class and she is only 17 months old! Crazy, but so good for kids to learn young, especially with all of the lakes and water around us!
That’s great Errign. I wish I had started Carlos even younger.
I think I have the same skin as you ! i always have to burn a little bit first for a tan to show so i’m super careful. this past weekend, i went to rockaway beach. even though i was wearing 30spf, i ended up a lobster. le sigh!
I’m so determined not to burn the rest of this summer. I have good color now from being outside so much, but I always worry that the damage has been done from years of burns as a teen.
We are anxiously awaiting the start of kindergarten too, it will be here too fast. I used to teach swimming lessons but find it hard to teach my own kids. I need to get Finn in lessons this winter. he has been a nervous nellie this summer.
My birthday is definitely my favorite summer holiday too! These questions are always so fun, I’ll have to participate sometime.
